Seeking motivation to level2009-03-10 00:00:00Welcome to today's edition of Ask WoW Insider, in which we publish your questions for dissection by the peanut gallery -- now with extra snark and commentary by one of our writers. This week JJ writes in:
I was wondering if you could give any advice to those who struggle with leveling. I guess you could call me a very casual wow player as I hardly have any time for it.
Recently my friend let me look at his level 70 and once I saw those in action, I have a hard time committing to leveling. When I play WoW I generally hang out around cities chilling with the other players. I just can't seem to get myself to level. I get bored very easily and I don't have a very high-level character. My highest is a level 29 hunter on...
Setting up your audio just right2009-03-10 00:00:00Kestrel's has an interesting post up about how he deals with audio while playing -- he listens to game audio (or music, apparently) through his computer's speakers, and pipes Vent audio in through his headset. The headset is hooked up via USB (so the sound signal can be different from the speaker signal), and of course the speakers are hooked up to the regular sound card. I'd have thought the way most of us do it (though we do know that some players don't lis...
Shadow Labs Guide2009-03-10 00:00:00The only level 70 instance in Auchindoun is also one of the longest 5-man instances in the Outlands.
Shadow Labyrinth will throw some difficult things at you, but it is one of the most fun and unique instances in the game.
Since SL is tuned for level 70 players, you should have a mage or hunter with you to help with crowd control.
To gain access to SL, only one person in your group will need the key from the Sethekk Halls instance.
In SL, the mobs that lead up to the first boss are really pretty easy and shouldn't cause experienced players any problems. The Refectory, though, is filled to the top with mobs, and the larger pulls will need to be wiped carefully. This is where a Shadow Priest comes in really handy. After this area, the mobs once again get easy. Although you will want to kill them in this order for the easiest time: Cabal Summoners, Spellbinders, and then Executioners.
The bosses in SL range from really easy to hard, and here is a breakdown of the different bosses:
Ambassador Hellmaw C he is the easiest boss in SL. The only real ability that y...
Shields, forums, and more on raid difficulty2009-03-10 00:00:00I have an extra-special request for all of you! We've had a few people asking for recommendations on other class-specific blogs, and I think that's a good thing to light the Reader Signal for. So in addition to your questions and feedback, recommend class-centric blogs in the comments below! Personally, I read A Dwarf Priest and World of Matticus when I'm looking for something Priestly. Now, to the questions...

I have yet to get Wrath (I know, "PRAISE BE") although I am getting it this Thursday. I was wondering about the new raiding system. Which is harder, 10-man or 25-man? For example is the 10-man easier in the point that you need less players but harder as in they need to be more well geared? Or is the 25-man harder?
You can start both 10 and 25-man raiding with the same gear. They're tuned so you don't need to run one before the other at all. The 10-man is probably easier to organize than the 25-man due to having fewer people, but as far as encounter difficulty...
In my experience, the 10-mans are slightly harder with a few exceptions where a very specific encounter is more challenging in the 25-man incarnation. Overall, the 10 is more difficult, which quite honestly boggles m...
Shifting Perspectives2009-03-10 00:00:00Every Tuesday, Shifting Perspectives explores issues affecting Druids and those who group with them. This week we start to wonder where the hell all the +hit from "Burning Crusade" went.
Greetings, fellow Druids, and welcome to another installment on Wrath gear at 80, and this week it's the boomkins' turn. Next week I'm going to tackle Bear gear at 80; Dan O'Halloran will take care of our Cat colleagues.
As a number of people have observed, it's tougher to get +hit-capped pre-raid in leather as opposed to cloth, so you're going to find an awful lot of cloth on the list. I realize this represents a new and exciting development in the history of moonkin item...
Shifting Perspectives2009-03-10 00:00:00CLOAK
Best overall: Durable Nerubhide Cape, a Leatherworking BoE.
Best drop: Because we do get the additional AC from this slot, Flowing Cloak of Command off Salramm the Fleshcrafter in normal Culling of Stratholme is technically best here. However, Cloak of the Gushing Wound off Erekem in heroic Violet Hold and Shroud of Reverberation off Volkhan in heroic Halls of Lightning are also surprisingly good, I think because of the meaty stamina allocation on both and the chance to get some +hit on the former and +expertise on the latter.
Best quest piece: Bloodbane's Resolve, from the quest The Fate of Bloodbane in Icecrown.
Best faction piece: Cloak of Peaceful Resolutions, available at honored with the Wyrmrest Accord.
Runner-up: Cloak of Tormented Skies, a Leatherworking BoE.
Enchant: Enchant Cloak - Major Agility.
CHEST
Best overall: Heroes' Dreamwalker Raiments, available for 80 emblems of heroism.
Best drop: Crystal-Infused Tunic, off Keristrasza in heroic Nexus, or Drake-Rider's Tunic off Skadi the Ruthless in heroic Utgarde Pinnacle.
Best quest piece: Exotic Leather Tunic, from the quest Junk in My Trun...
Shifting Perspectives2009-03-10 00:00:00Enchant: Frosthide Leg Armor.
FEET
Best overall: Titan-forged Boots of Triumph, available for 15 Wintergrasp marks. /sigh.
Best drop: Slag Footguards, off Volkhan in heroic Halls of Lightning. Boots of the Whirling Mist off Sjonnir in heroic Halls of Stone are fairly similar but unfortunately lack a socket. Gorloc Muddy Footwraps off Eck the Ferocious in heroic Gun'drak are also usable, though not quite as good as Slag.
Best quest piece: Rhino Hide Kneeboots, from the quest One of a Kind in Gun'drak.
Best faction piece: Boots of the Neverending Path, available at exalted with the Argent Crusade. It's actually relatively tough to get +hit on bear-oriented gear and this has a ton of it.
Runner-up: Boots of Captain Ellis, available for 40 emblems.
Enchant: Most raiding bears swear by Tuskarr's Vitality, but you may want to use Enchant Boots - Superior Agility, Enchant Boots - Greater Fortitude, or Enchant Boots - Icewalker depending on your current gear set.
RINGS
Best overall: Keystone Great-Ring, from the Prophet Tharon'ja in heroic Drak'tharon Keep. This is really an excellent piece; try to get this if at all possible.
Best drop: Band of Torture, off Drakos the Interrogator in heroic Oculu...
Shifting Perspectives2009-03-10 00:00:00BELT
Best overall: Sharp-Barbed Leather Belt, off Ingvar the Plunderer in heroic Utgarde Keep. Trollwoven Girdle is very close to Sharp-Barbed stats-wise and easy to get made. Jorach's Crocolisk-Skin Belt is also pretty close but not, in my opinion, worth shelling out 40 emblems if you can get Trollwoven. These three pieces are way better than anything else you can put in this slot barring the Deadly Gladiator's Belt of Triumph, so at the very least count on having Trollwoven made if you can't get Sharp-Barbed to drop.
Best drop: Batrider's Cord off Trollgore in heroic Drak'tharon Keep.
Best quest piece: Honestly, there's not much here. The best I could find was Strange Voodoo Belt, ...
Shifting Perspectives2009-03-10 00:00:00My main spends most of her time tanking, so I have a little more experience with the gear on this list as opposed to others. Dan O'Halloran will be writing a guide to gearing a Cat Druid next week, and with that we'll be rounding up pre-raid gear for all 4 specs.
As with our entry on pre-raid Restoration gear at 80 and our entry on pre-raid Balance gear at 80, this guide assumes that you do not presently have access to either 10-man or 25-man raids, and if I miss any piece that you've found helpful, please drop a comment and I'll make sure it gets added. I should also add that this gear set presumes you are gearing your bear tank with an eye toward main-tanking in raids and/or tanking the more difficult heroics. If you're mostly DPSing or off-tanking, please feel free to swap in more DPS-oriented pieces prioritizing +hit and +crit over +expertise, +dodge, and stamina. Before we get any further, some helpful links:
Toskk's Bear Tank Time-To-Live Method, allowing you to look at upgrades from the context of your present set of gear and calculate how long you can go without healing assuming different talents and items.
ThinkTank on pre-raid gear: While I don't think that Kalon's been able to update this ...

Every Tuesday, Shifting Perspectives explores issues affecting Druids and those who group with them. This week we take a look at how to gear a PvE Restoration Druid at level 80, in the hopes of preventing other trees from suffering our fate during our first 10-man Naxx run, which -- no, no, it's too painful even to think about. Pass the schnapps.
Greetings readers, and welcome to Wrath Gear-A-Palooza 2009. We'll be running one of these for each Druid spec.
I'm not going to "rank" gear numerically, because I think that's a fairly unhelpful means of organizing items when your access to all of them as a fresh 80 may be very limited. Generally you're going to have access to quest rewards and faction gear before you get access to badge pieces or oft-uncooperative heroic drops, so I've organized the list by where you can get particular drops. It's generally safe to assume that a heroic drop is better than a blue you're using from an Icecrown quest, but not always. If you're starting to move into higher levels of gear, I found the following links to be incredibly helpful, and I hope you do too:
