Your pet has to stay Unhappy long enough to regress to Loyalty level 1 and stay that way for a good long time.
To be quite honest, once you get to
second or third level loyalty, you'd have to be trying in order to have your pet run away on you.-(Back in Retirement) Draka:

I tamed my first pet today, and he's currently at loyalty lvl 4. I hear it goes up to 6. What my question is, is how do I know when he's likely to do a runner?
Does a pet need to drop all the way to loyalty lvl 1 unhappy before he'll bolt, or will simply having an unhappy rating do it even at loyalty lvl 6?
The reason I ask is not because I plan on neglecting my pet, but because I am incredibly forgetful, and if my experience with forgetting mana drinks is anything to go by, I can fully expect me to end up in the middle of nowhere to exp before realising I've forgotten pet food.
I'd
make it up once I got back to town and feed him right back up, but I don't really want him running away while I'm levelling if I can help it.-Verata - Blood Elf Death Knight
